In determining the criteria for what qualifies as a girl group, several things were considered: Mature groups, such as The McGuire Sisters, are omitted in favor of younger "girl" acts. Female lead singers with male backup, such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, are also omitted, but primarily-female acts with one male, non-lead-singer group member, such as The Orlons, are included. Duos are counted as groups, but solo female artists do not qualify...that's another list!

Rankings are based on the popularity of each artist during the period of 1950 through 1969. Two girl groups appear twice: The Marvelettes (#4) also recorded as The Darnells (#99) and The Chiffons (#9) moonlighted as The Four Pennies (#52). Also, members of The Cookies (#75) evolved into The Raelets (#62). The mid-'60s configuration of The Ikettes (#22) later became The Mirettes (#57). The Cookies of the 1950s (#75) had a completely different lineup than the 1960s group (#14) of the same name.
