Records on the many independent labels distributed by Atlantic-Atco are included, of which ten hits by eight artists (The Chords, Booker T. and the MG's, Rufus Thomas, Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Joe Tex, The Shadows of Knight and The Capitols) on six labels (Cat, Stax, Volt, Dial, Dunwich and Karen) made the list. Rankings are based on the popularity of each song during the period of 1950 through 1969.
Aretha Franklin tops all Atlantic label artists with nine songs on the list, followed by Bobby Darin (the top Atco artist) with eight. The Drifters are next with seven songs (including two featuring Clyde McPhatter). The Coasters and The Clovers each have six, followed by The Rascals with five (three as The Young Rascals) and Ruth Brown with five. Joe Turner and Barbara Lewis have three apiece, as does Clyde McPhatter (including two with The Drifters).
