This list is comprised of songs released on Chicago's Vee-Jay Records and its subsidiary labels Falcon, Abner, Tollie and Interphon during the company's existence beginning in 1953 (though no recordings from that year made the cut). Rankings are based on the popularity of each song during the period of 1954 through 1966.
Jimmy Reed tops all artists with 15 songs on the list, followed by The 4 Seasons with 14 and Jerry Butler with 14 (including two with Betty Everett and one with The Impressions). Dee Clark is next with nine, The Beatles have eight, Betty Everett has six (including two with Jerry Butler) and Gene Chandler has five (including one as The Duke of Earl). Though the label's output was primarily rhythm and blues, British imports (The Beatles, Frank Ifield and The Honeycombs) account for 12 songs on the list. In addition, there is one lone artist represented in each of several categories: country (Orville Couch), jazz (Eddie Harris), instrumental (also Harris), novelty (Jimmy Cross) and U.S. rock (The Standells). Also, two songs are represented with two versions: "At My Front Door" (#20 and #65) and "Duke of Earl" (#3) and its answer song variation "Duchess of Earl" (#97).
